    NEW DELHI: At the very least 10 folks have been killed on Friday (Apr 10) when a ship carrying dozens of passengers in northern India hit a pontoon bridge and capsized, police stated.

    The incident occurred on the Yamuna river within the city of Mathura.

    “Up to now, 10 our bodies have been recovered,” senior police officer Shailesh Kumar Pandey instructed reporters.

    The vessel was carrying 27 passengers when it overturned. It was not initially clear how many individuals have been lacking.

    Rescuers from the hearth division and divers have been deployed to look for many who remained lacking.

    Further groups from the Nationwide Catastrophe Response Drive have been additionally speeding to the scene to help in rescue efforts. 

    Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi supplied condolences, saying he was “deeply pained” by the tragedy and wished the injured a speedy restoration.

    “The native administration is helping these affected,” he stated in a press release on social media.

    Boat accidents are frequent on Indian waterways, typically blamed on overcrowding, poor enforcement of security norms and insufficient life-saving tools.

    In 2024, 15 folks, together with 13 youngsters who have been going for a college picnic, drowned when their boat capsized within the western state of Gujarat.
