    Particulars have surfaced on what led to this week’s surprising firing of Gabe Alvarez.

    The Detroit Tigers introduced abruptly on Tuesday that they’d fired Alvarez, the supervisor of their Triple-A affiliate, the Toledo Mud Hens. Particulars have been initially scarce, aside from the Tigers noting that Alvarez had been terminated for an undisclosed violation of club policy.

    On Wednesday, Alvarez spoke to Jeff Passan of ESPN and revealed why he was fired. Alvarez mentioned that he despatched an “inappropriate” message to a feminine colleague.

    “I despatched a single textual content message to a colleague that I meant as a lighthearted joke,” Alvarez was quoted as saying. “Shortly after sending it, I acknowledged that the message was inappropriate and didn’t replicate the values and judgment I try to uphold, and I instantly reached out to make clear my intent.

    “I by no means meant to trigger discomfort or offense, and I remorse that the message created this case,” continued Alvarez. “This was an remoted incident and never reflective of my long-standing document of professionalism, respect for colleagues, and conduct over the course of my profession.”

    The 52-year-old Alvarez was in his second season because the supervisor of the Mud Hens after initially becoming a member of the Tigers group in 2022. Passan’s report provides that Alvarez had a clear file with the Tigers’ HR division earlier than his termination this week.

    Nevertheless, the Tigers have already had a number of sexual harassment scandals in recent times. Most notably, their former assistant normal supervisor, Sam Menzin, was allegedly caught sending graphic photos to female employees before his resignation in 2025.
