    CATIA LA MAR, Venezuela: Rescuers pulled a 43-year-old safety guard alive from a collapsed basement early Thursday (Jul 2), ending a gruelling, days-long operation that grew to become a logo of hope after the devastation of twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela eight days earlier.

    Hernán Alberto Gil Flores was extracted safely after being trapped since Jun 24 beneath the rubble within the basement of the Galerías Playa Grande procuring centre within the coastal city of La Guaira. Rescuers initially made contact with him over the weekend.
