    LONDON: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Monday (Mar 17) warned his nation should scale back its reliance on the US and would flip in direction of its “dependable” European allies as an alternative on his first journey overseas.

    Carney’s transatlantic go to to British chief Keir Starmer and France’s Emmanuel Macron got here after US President Donald Trump advised his nation may develop into a part of the US and threatened its economic system.

    After succeeding Justin Trudeau final week, Carney conspicuously selected key European powers France and the UK, relatively than the US, for the visits.

    Following talks with UK Prime Minister Starmer in London, Carney informed journalists his nation “should diversify” its commerce and safety ties.

    “What is evident is that our commerce and our safety relations are too reliant on the US. We should diversify,” the previous Financial institution of England governor mentioned.

    “That is one of many causes for which my first go to is to Paris and London.”

    Underlining their “shared values” and “shared king”, Starmer thanked Carney for his “method to Ukraine”, two days after the Canadian chief took half in a video convention on shoring up assist for Kyiv hosted by his UK counterpart.

    Britain’s King Charles, who can be head of state in Canada, earlier welcomed Carney for talks at Buckingham Palace.

    Carney had travelled to the British capital after assembly France’s President Macron on the Elysee Palace in Paris.

    Describing Canada because the “most European of non-European nations”, Carney mentioned his nation wanted to spice up ties with European allies like France whereas making an attempt to retain optimistic relations with Washington.
