    WASHINGTON: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday (Apr 30) urged India and Pakistan to work with one another to de-escalate tensions after final week’s Islamist militant attack in India-administered Kashmir that killed 26 folks, the State Division mentioned.

    Rubio spoke individually with Indian Overseas Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif whereas expressing help to India in combating extremism and urging Pakistan to cooperate in probing the assault, the State Division mentioned after Rubio’s calls.

    Wednesday’s calls mark the best ranges of publicly identified simultaneous diplomatic engagements from Washington aimed toward decreasing India-Pakistan tensions for the reason that April 22 assault.

    India is a crucial US accomplice to counter China’s rising affect. Pakistan stays Washington’s ally at the same time as its significance diminished after the 2021 US withdrawal from neighbouring Afghanistan.

    State Division statements after the calls termed the Kashmir assault as “terror” and “unconscionable,” and mentioned Rubio spoke to Pakistan “of the necessity to condemn” it.

    Rubio “urged Pakistani officers’ cooperation in investigating this unconscionable assault,” the State Division mentioned. Sharif’s workplace mentioned he requested Rubio to induce India “to dial down the rhetoric.”

    Rubio urged the Asian nuclear-armed neighbours to work with one another “to de-escalate tensions, re-establish direct communications, and preserve peace”.
