Refugees and migrants pay as a lot as $7,000 for a one-way journey to Puerto Rico from the Dominican Republic, which shares the island of Hispaniola with crisis-torn Haiti.

Unlawful migration from the Dominican Republic to Puerto Rico has been a rising phenomenon within the final decade.

In 2022, no less than 5 individuals drowned and one other 66 have been rescued in an incident involving a suspected human smuggling boat close to the uninhabited island of Mona, west of Puerto Rico.
