    WASHINGTON: US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent mentioned on Friday (Aug 1) he believes Washington and Beijing are nearing a breakthrough commerce deal following two days of negotiations in Stockholm.

    “This week’s negotiations in Stockholm have superior our talks with China, and I consider that we now have the makings of a deal that can profit each of our nice nations,” Bessent posted on social media platform X. The submit was later deleted and reuploaded as a consequence of a technical error, based on a Treasury Division spokesperson.

    “I’m optimistic concerning the path ahead,” Bessent added.

    The Treasury mentioned the language of the submit mirrored what Bessent has constantly acknowledged in latest interviews. Talking to CNBC on Thursday, the secretary confirmed the US sees progress in talks however pressured {that a} deal is “not 100% performed.”

    Bessent informed CNBC that US negotiators “pushed again fairly a bit” in the course of the two-day talks, which aimed to iron out remaining variations following earlier frameworks agreed in Could and June.

    China is dealing with a looming Aug 12 deadline to finalise a complete tariff settlement with President Donald Trump’s administration. Failure to take action may set off a brand new spherical of punitive tariffs or different commerce restrictions.
