Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani has warned in opposition to Israel’s expansionist imaginative and prescient of the Arab area as he lambasted the nation for final week’s lethal bombing of Doha, calling the assault “blatant, treacherous, and cowardly”.

“My nation’s capital was subjected to a treacherous assault concentrating on a residence housing the households of Hamas leaders and their negotiating delegation,” the Qatari emir mentioned in his opening speech on the emergency summit of the Arab League and Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

“Our residents had been stunned, and all the world was shocked by the aggression and cowardly terrorist act,” he mentioned, referring to the worldwide condemnation of the September 9 assault that killed six folks.

“We’re decided to do no matter is critical to protect our sovereignty and confront Israeli aggression.”

Doha, an in depth US ally that hosts the most important United States army base within the area, has dubbed the unprecedented assault “state terrorism”. The strike focused Hamas leaders gathered to debate a US-backed Gaza ceasefire proposal. The Palestinian group says its high management survived the assassination try.

Sheikh Tamim mentioned Israel’s actions confirmed it had no real curiosity in peace, including that Israel is making an attempt to “thwart the negotiations” geared toward ending Israel’s battle in Gaza, which has killed greater than 64,800 Palestinians.

“Anybody who persistently and systematically targets a negotiating celebration is working to thwart the negotiations,” he mentioned.

Sheikh Tamim accused Israel of waging what he described as a battle geared toward destroying Gaza, which has been underneath unrelenting Israeli bombardment for the previous 23 months.

“The Israeli battle on Gaza has became a battle of extermination,” he mentioned. “Israel needs to make Gaza uninhabitable as a prelude to displacing its inhabitants.”

Al Jazeera’s Nida Ibrahim, reporting from Doha, mentioned: “There’s been agency help at this summit for Qatar and condemnation of Israel over the assault, which members say undermines safety and stability within the area.”

    The Arab Peace Initiative

Qatar has been a key mediator in oblique negotiations between Israel and Hamas since Israel launched its army offensive in Gaza in October 2023. Israeli actions in Gaza have been dubbed genocide by quite a few rights organisations, together with the Worldwide Affiliation of Genocide Students.

United Nations Safety Council (UNSC) members, together with Israel’s closest ally, the US, condemned the Israeli assault on Doha on Thursday.

Addressing the UNSC, Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani mentioned that Doha wouldn’t tolerate additional breaches of its safety and sovereignty. “Israel is undermining the steadiness of the area impetuously,” he mentioned.

However Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has threatened to attack Hamas leaders again if Qatar doesn’t expel the Palestinian leaders. Throughout a meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Netanyahu on Monday repeated that Israel will hit Hamas “wherever they’re”.

The threats come regardless of US President Donald Trump assuring Sheikh Tamim final week that “such a factor won’t occur once more on their soil”. The Trump administration has mentioned that the assault on Doha didn’t “advance Israel’s or America’s targets”.

Rubio is ready to journey to Qatar on Tuesday, a senior US State Division official says.

The Qatari emir mentioned that Netanyahu is dreaming of creating the Arab area “an Israeli sphere of affect”, and mentioned that believing “the Arab area will turn out to be an Israeli zone of affect is a harmful phantasm”.

He went on to notice that Israel’s rejection of the Arab Peace Initiative had contributed to repeated cycles of violence within the area.

First endorsed by the Arab League in 2002, and reaffirmed in 2007 and 2017, the initiative supplied Israel full normalisation of relations with Arab states in return for a whole withdrawal from territories occupied, together with the West Financial institution, Gaza, the Golan Heights, and southern Lebanon.

Israel’s then-Prime Minister Ariel Sharon rejected the plan as a “non-starter”, and successive Israeli governments, together with Netanyahu’s, have dismissed the proposals.

“If Israel had accepted the Arab Peace Initiative, it will have spared all the area numerous tragedies,” Sheikh Tamim mentioned.
