I’m writing in response to “WA lawmakers cut spots for free preschool program” (Sept. 22, Schooling Lab), which underscores the kid care disaster and the disconnect between early education schemes.

As a father or mother with firsthand expertise within the Early Childhood Schooling and Help Program, developmental preschool and Transition to Kindergarten, I’ve seen the profound affect these packages have on kids, households and communities. I’ve additionally witnessed the challenges they face. Whereas the article factors to Transition to Kindergarten and workforce shortages as contributing components to ECEAP under-enrollment, we should additionally think about systemic points equivalent to restricted transportation companies and the dearth of wraparound take care of working households. My family transitioned from ECEAP to TK as a result of it provided transportation and reasonably priced prolonged care.

I urge legislators, program directors, the Division of Kids, Youth, and Households, and different stakeholders to take a better have a look at how funding is distributed and whether or not it really displays the wants of our communities. If Transition to Kindergarten is drawing households away from ECEAP, maybe it’s time to revisit funding for Early ECEAP or discover partnerships that present transportation or wraparound care straight at ECEAP websites.

Considerate, strategic funding is important if we’re severe about addressing the kid care disaster and supporting households in a significant means.
