    BERLIN: German authorities stated on Friday (Nov 14) that the risk posed by Antifa Ost, a left-wing group designated by Washington as a worldwide terrorist organisation, has sharply diminished following a sequence of arrests and convictions.

    Antifa, brief for “anti-fascist”, is a decentralised motion and not using a clear construction, command hierarchy or chief, in line with a 2020 Congressional Analysis Service report.

    “The safety authorities’ evaluation is that the potential risk posed by the group has not too long ago decreased considerably,” Inside Ministry spokesperson Sarah Fruehauf informed an everyday press convention, including that its leaders and notably violent members had been both in custody or already convicted.

    The feedback got here a day after the US designated Antifa Ost and three other European groups as “Specially Designated Global Terrorists”, accusing them of finishing up politically motivated violence.

    Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated the transfer was a part of efforts to confront what he referred to as a “marketing campaign of political violence” and that Washington would goal different teams worldwide.

    German authorities spokesperson Steffen Meyer declined to touch upon the designation, however stated Washington acted independently when requested whether or not Berlin had been made conscious of the choice forward of time.

    Germany’s Overseas Ministry stated the designation may have repercussions for German residents, together with potential asset freezes, transaction bans, entry restrictions and deportation from the US.

    Antifa Ost, also called the “Hammer Gang” for its most popular weapon, operates as a far-left extremist community, in line with the Inside Ministry.

    Authorities say the group’s members had carried out quite a few violent assaults lately in opposition to people recognized by Antifa Ost as “fascists” inside Germany’s right-wing scene.
