Boeing and NASA have agreed to maintain astronauts off the corporate’s subsequent Starliner flight and as a substitute carry out a trial run with cargo to show its security.

Monday’s announcement comes eight months after the primary and solely Starliner crew returned to Earth aboard SpaceX after a chronic mission. Though NASA test pilots Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams managed to dock Starliner to the Worldwide House Station in 2024, the capsule had so many issues that NASA ordered it to come back empty, leaving the astronauts caught there for greater than 9 months.

Engineers have since been poring over the thruster and different points that plagued the Starliner capsule. Its subsequent cargo run to the house station will happen no sooner than April, pending extra exams and certification.

Boeing stated in an announcement that it stays dedicated to the Starliner program with security the very best precedence.

NASA can also be slashing the deliberate variety of Starliner flights, from six to 4. If the cargo mission goes effectively, then that may go away the remaining three Starliner flights for crew exchanges earlier than the house station is decommissioned in 2030.

“NASA and Boeing are persevering with to carefully take a look at the Starliner propulsion system in preparation for 2 potential flights subsequent 12 months,” NASA’s business crew program supervisor Steve Stich stated in an announcement.

NASA employed Boeing and SpaceX in 2014 — three years after the ultimate house shuttle flight — to ferry astronauts to and from the orbiting outpost. The Boeing contract was value $4.2 billion and SpaceX’s $2.6 billion.

Elon Musk’s SpaceX launched its first astronaut mission for NASA in 2020. Its twelfth crew liftoff for NASA was this summer season.
