SAN FRANCISCO: US lawmaker John Moolenaar, the chair of the US Home of Representatives’ bipartisan choose committee targeted on China, on Friday (Dec 12) requested Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick to elucidate the small print of President Donald Trump’s decision to allow Nvidia to sell its H200 chips to China.

The transfer by Trump earlier this week signalled a marked break with precedent from Trump’s personal first administration, and that of former President Joseph Biden’s, of not permitting China entry to essentially the most highly effective synthetic intelligence {hardware} from US chip companies.

The H200 is the predecessor to Nvidia’s present flagship chips and remains to be in use within the US AI trade.

In a letter to Lutnick on Friday, Moolenaar cited media stories that stated Trump’s resolution was primarily based not less than partly on claimed chip efficiency beneficial properties by Huawei Applied sciences Co, which is growing its personal AI chips.

However these beneficial properties got here from a chip that was illegally procured by way of shell corporations from Taiwanese and Korean suppliers, Moolenaar’s letter stated, and Huawei’s subsequent providing is anticipated to take a step backward when solely relying on home Chinese language chip factories.

Moolenaar stated that the approaching setback for Huawei was proof that Trump’s earlier strategy to export controls was working, and altering course offered dangers.

“As AI evolves, combination computing energy – not theoretical per-chip effectivity – will stay the engine of progress,” Moolenaar wrote. “Approving the sale of cutting-edge chips to Chinese language corporations dangers undercutting the extraordinary strategic benefit that President Trump achieved in his first time period.”

Moolenaar requested Lutnick for a briefing on the proof and evaluation underlying the H200 resolution by mid-January.

The White Home and Commerce Division didn’t instantly reply to requests for remark.
