    SYDNEY: Tech large Meta urged Australia on Monday (Jan 12) to rethink its world-first social media ban for under-16s, whereas reporting that it has blocked greater than 544,000 accounts below the brand new regulation.

    Australia has required huge platforms, together with Meta, TikTok and YouTube, to cease underage customers from holding accounts because the laws came into force on Dec 10 final yr.

    Corporations face fines of A$49.5 million (US$33 million) in the event that they fail to take “cheap steps” to conform.

    Billionaire Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta stated it had eliminated 331,000 underage accounts from Instagram, 173,000 from Fb, and 40,000 from Threads within the week to Dec 11.

    The corporate stated it was dedicated to complying with the regulation.
