VATICAN CITY: Pope Leo on Wednesday (Apr 8) praised the two-week ceasefire in the Iran war, hours after calling United States President Donald Trump’s menace towards the inhabitants of Iran “unacceptable”.

The pope, who has emerged as an outspoken critic of the conflict in current weeks, mentioned he welcomed the announcement of the ceasefire with satisfaction and urged continued negotiation to convey a full finish to the regional battle.

“In mild of those previous hours of nice rigidity for the Center East and for the entire world, I welcome with satisfaction … the announcement of a direct two-week truce,” Pope Leo, the primary US pope, mentioned in his weekly viewers.

“Solely by way of a return to negotiation can an finish to the conflict be achieved,” he mentioned.

Pope Leo, who is thought for selecting his phrases fastidiously, has been ramping up his criticism of the US-Israeli conflict towards Iran.

After Trump threatened Iran on Tuesday that “an entire civilisation will die tonight” if the nation didn’t meet US calls for for a truce, Pope Leo advised journalists that the menace was “actually unacceptable”.

It’s uncommon for the pope, who leads 1.4 billion Catholics around the globe, to reply on to a world chief.
