    BEIJING: China stated on Wednesday (Dec 31) it’ll impose further 55 per cent tariffs on some beef imports from nations together with Brazil, Australia and america that exceed a sure amount from Jan 1.

    The value of beef in China has trended downwards lately, with analysts blaming oversupply and an absence of demand because the world’s second-largest financial system has slowed.

    On the similar time, imports have surged, with China representing a vastly essential marketplace for nations similar to Brazil, Argentina and Australia.

    Investigators discovered beef imports had broken China’s home trade, Beijing’s commerce ministry stated in an announcement. The probe lined recent, frozen, bone-in and boneless beef.

    The additional tariffs apply for 3 years – till Dec 31, 2028.

    The ministry described the levies as “safeguards” and stated they’d be regularly relaxed.

    Nations have been assigned annual quotas and beef despatched to China will probably be topic to the additional 55 per cent levy if imports transcend that quantity.

    In 2026, Brazil has an import quota of 1.1 million tons whereas Argentina has a cap of roughly half that.

    Australia faces a quota of round 200,000 tons and america one among 164,000 tons.

    The ministry additionally stated it was suspending a part of a free commerce settlement with Australia protecting beef.
