Re: “Thank you, Emerald City Comic Con, for the escape from reality” (March 11, Opinion):

Removed from being escapism, as editorial cartoonist David Horsey claimed, Emerald Metropolis Comedian Con jogged my memory precisely what we must be preventing for.

If he had seemed past the costumes, he would have seen panels on historical past that’s actively being erased (the Japanese American 442nd Fight Staff), and the way science fiction has lengthy superior concepts about fairness and gender. These aren’t distractions; they’re very important conversations occurring in areas that welcome inventive expression.

I discovered solidarity at Comedian Con entrance and heart carrying my Cascadia Iron Entrance shirt. Many of the compliments got here from Star Wars cosplayers, together with one who passionately defined how the Rebels and the Iron Entrance are ideologically aligned.

The sensation I carried all day at Comedian Con was the identical one I had final fall in the course of the election: jaw set, decided. That is the world I’m preventing for: folks collectively, defending their methods of being on this planet. It’s not escape. It’s engagement.
