    BRUSSELS: The European Union on Saturday (Nov 8) condemned Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon and requested it to respect a ceasefire with the militant group Hezbollah.

    Israel carried out recent assaults in southern Lebanon on Thursday, claiming to focus on the Iran-backed organisation and accusing the group of rearming.

    “The EU calls on Israel to stop all actions that violate decision 1701 and the ceasefire settlement reached a yr in the past in November 2024,” the EU’s overseas affairs spokesman Anouar El Anouni said.

    “On the similar time, we urge all Lebanese actors and particularly Hezbollah to chorus from any measures or responses that might additional inflame the state of affairs,” he added.

    “Focus by all events should be on preserving the ceasefire and the progress achieved to date.”

    The Israeli military had beforehand instructed residents of 4 villages to evacuate buildings, warning that it deliberate to focus on Hezbollah’s army infrastructure.

    The Lebanese military has accused Israel of looking for to “undermine Lebanon’s stability” with Thursday’s strikes and to “stop the completion of the military’s deployment” consistent with the ceasefire.

    Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has condemned the Israeli strikes, as has Iran, which on Friday known as them “savage” assaults and appealed for the worldwide group to intervene.
