A magnitude 6.3 earthquake has struck close to the coast of Ecuador, in keeping with the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).

The quake was at a depth of 23km (14.29 miles), EMSC stated.

Pictures shared online present buildings visibly broken within the earthquake. There have been no rapid experiences of casualties.

    Previous earthquakes

Ecuador has a protracted and painful historical past of seismic disasters.

In 2013, a quake that rattled northern Peru and southern Ecuador left not less than 14 individuals useless and destroyed properties, colleges and well being clinics.

Three years later, in 2016, a devastating magnitude 7.8 earthquake – Ecuador’s strongest since 1979 – killed not less than 77 individuals and injured greater than 500 others.

The nation lies alongside the Pacific’s “Ring of Fireplace”, a unstable zone of seismic and volcanic exercise encircling the ocean.

Ecuador straddles the boundary the place the Nazca and South American tectonic plates meet – two large sections of the Earth’s crust that grind towards one another, shifting at a median price of about 65 millimetres (2.5 inches) per 12 months.
