Re: “Pay-per-mile could supplement state gas tax” (Feb. 17, A1):

I learn with curiosity and amusement the article concerning a pay-per-mile gasoline tax. Rep. Jake Fey, D-Tacoma, proposes this new type of gasoline tax as an alternative of a tax surcharge per gallon to pay for street repairs. Motorists would pay yearly as a part of their car registration charges.

The article states, “Fey mentioned he believed folks would truthfully report odometer readings …” I discover this amusing as in Gene Balk’s FYI Man column he writes that there are roughly 180,000 canine in Seattle however solely about 30,000 are licensed (“These are Seatle’s hottest canine names,” Feb. 18, Northwest). Additionally within the Feb. 18 version, in Rant & Rave on web page B8, a “ranter” reported driving from “residence to the Wallingford put up workplace, to the Ballard Fred Meyer, and again. I counted 22 expired tabs.”

Are the nice folks of Tacoma extra trustworthy than Seattle residents? I doubt it.
