    TOKYO: Shares in Japan’s largest automotive corporations fell on Thursday (Mar 27) after US President Donald Trump introduced a 25 per cent tariff on auto imports to take impact subsequent week.

    The world’s top-selling automaker Toyota dropped 3.7 per cent because the Tokyo market opened, whereas Nissan shed 3.2 per cent and Honda fell as a lot as 3.1 per cent.

    Mitsubishi Motors was down 3.7 per cent, and in South Korea, Hyundai shares dipped 3.4 per cent.

    The auto trade is a big pillar of the Japanese economic system, with about 10 per cent of jobs there linked to the sector.

    Autos accounted for roughly a 3rd of Japan’s 21.3 trillion yen (US$142 billion) of US-bound exports in 2024.

    Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba stated that Tokyo will put “all choices on the desk” in coping with Washington’s announcement.

    “Japan is making vital quantities of funding to the USA. It is also creating jobs,” Ishiba advised parliament.

    Japanese ministers have been lobbying their US counterparts to safe tariff exemptions for items like metal and automobiles, however these requests have been denied.
