Re: “U.S. can’t afford to keep expanding the size of its welfare state” (Oct. 27, Opinion):

There’s loads of U.S. cash for humane remedy of those that want care, however most of our federal taxes go to previous, present or future wars. Army spending accounts for practically half of whole discretionary spending, together with life-ending nuclear weapons.

If the U.S. modified its priorities for federal spending and taxed wealth earnings and the multimillionaires and billionaires at a fee like progressive European international locations do, then there’d be no scarcity of cash for well being take care of all, Social Safety, meals and housing help, high quality training preschool by way of highschool commencement, plus turning across the local weather catastrophe we’re in.

A sturdy social security web is just not a welfare state, it’s upholding “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” and “justice for all.” What we will’t afford is militarism, environmental destruction, and oligarchy.

Let’s unite in enhancing our financial and electoral methods and defend/improve the well-being of all life.

    Michael Siptroth, Belfair
