US President Donald Trump on Sunday (Nov 9) stated John Coale, who helped negotiate the discharge of prisoners from Belarus, was his selection for particular envoy to Minsk and would press for the discharge of extra detainees.
Trump has elevated US engagement with the authoritarian state, sending a number of delegations to Minsk this 12 months. Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko is a detailed ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
In September, Belarus freed 52 prisoners after an attraction from Trump. He had beforehand urged Lukashenko, who has been in energy for greater than 30 years, to launch 1,400 detainees whom the US chief has described as hostages.
