    WASHINGTON: America authorities on Thursday (Mar 5) quickly eased financial sanctions in opposition to Russia to permit Russian oil presently stranded at sea to be offered to India.

    The Treasury Division’s Workplace of International Belongings Management issued a Russia-related licence “authorising the supply and sale of crude oil and petroleum merchandise of Russian Federation origin loaded on vessels as of Mar 5, 2026, to India”, the Treasury mentioned in a press release.

    It mentioned the transactions, together with these from vessels blocked by numerous sanctions regimes, are authorised by the tip of the day on Apr 3, 2026.

    Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent mentioned the waiver was issued “to allow oil to maintain flowing into the worldwide market”.

    “This intentionally short-term measure is not going to present vital monetary profit to the Russian authorities because it solely authorises transactions involving oil already stranded at sea,” he posted on X.

    The sale to India will “alleviate stress attributable to Iran’s attempt to take global energy hostage“, he added, although India has mentioned it’s going to cease buying Russian oil as a part of a commerce cope with the US.
