In his subsequent interview with Fox Information, Mr Trump suggested the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, to “make a deal” as a result of “Russia is a really large nation, and they don’t seem to be”.
Whether or not that is merely Mr Trump parroting a well-worn Russian talking level – that Moscow will finally prevail over Kyiv in a battle of attrition – or whether or not it’s his genuinely held perception is nearly immaterial.
