In his subsequent interview with Fox Information, Mr Trump suggested the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, to “make a deal” as a result of “Russia is a really large nation, and they don’t seem to be”.

Whether or not that is merely Mr Trump parroting a well-worn Russian talking level – that Moscow will finally prevail over Kyiv in a battle of attrition – or whether or not it’s his genuinely held perception is nearly immaterial. However it alerts that Mr Trump is but once more pivoting away from supporting Ukraine in its quest for a simply peace.

For now, the American president has not fully deserted his efforts to deliver peace to Ukraine. However he has put the onus on Mr Zelenskyy with out providing any of the reassurances that got to him and different European leaders only days ago. Mr Zelenskyy reportedly had a prolonged dialog with Mr Trump after the Alaska meet, and can meet his American counterpart in Washington DC on Monday.

Mr Trump’s deal-making could be very a lot premised on the thought of “winner takes all”. Sadly for him, and above all Ukraine, he has left Alaska empty-handed and Mr Putin with an enormous smile on his face.
