Sea Life, which is owned by the British theme park big Merlin Entertainments, first launched the orange-beaked penguins, recognized for being speedy swimmers, to London in 2011.

Two of the birds, named Polly and Ratchet, have endured “14 years underground”, stated Freedom for Animals, whose petition – which preceded the MPs’ letter – garnered over 37,000 signatures.

“Others, like Gilbert and Ziggy, have by no means seen the sky,” stated the charity.

A spokesperson for Merlin Leisure’s conservation workforce stated the enclosure was really on the bottom flooring, including that the area reproduces the birds’ pure habitat so far as doable and meets zoo welfare requirements.

“We have now an unimaginable workforce of conservationists, animal welfare specialists, and aquarists who’re with the penguins day by day, ensuring they’re wholesome and thriving,” stated the spokesperson.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s spokesperson stated the federal government takes “animal welfare extraordinarily severely”.

London Aquarium will get over a million guests yearly, based on Sea Life.
