    Prada to launch US$930 sandals made in India after cultural appropriation backlash

    Prada will make a limited-edition assortment of sandals in India impressed by the nation’s conventional footwear, promoting every pair at round 800 euros (US$930), Prada senior govt Lorenzo Bertelli advised Reuters, turning a backlash over cultural appropriation right into a collaboration with Indian artisans.

    The Italian luxurious group plans to make 2,000 pairs of the sandals within the areas of Maharashtra and Karnataka underneath a take care of two state-backed our bodies, mixing native Indian craftsmanship with Italian expertise and know-how.  

    “We’ll combine the unique producer’s normal capabilities with our manufacturing strategies”, Bertelli, who’s chief advertising and marketing officer and head of company social accountability, advised Reuters in an interview. 

    The gathering will go on sale in February 2026 throughout 40 Prada shops worldwide and on-line, the corporate mentioned.

    Prada confronted criticism six months in the past after exhibiting sandals resembling Twelfth-century Indian footwear, often called Kolhapuri chappals, at a Milan present. Images went viral, prompting outrage from Indian artisans and politicians. Prada later admitted its design drew from historic Indian kinds and commenced talks with artisan teams for collaboration.
