MEXICO CITY: Considered one of Mexico’s most infamous drug lords, Nemesio Oseguera, or El Mencho, was killed in a navy raid on Sunday (Feb 22), sparking widespread retaliatory violence.

President Claudia Sheinbaum has been beneath mounting stress from Washington to intensify her offensive towards drug cartels blamed for producing and smuggling medicine, significantly the artificial opioid fentanyl, throughout the border to the USA.

Oseguera, 60, the mastermind of the highly effective Jalisco New Era Cartel (CJNG), died in custody after being injured in a navy operation by Mexican particular forces within the city of Tapalpa on Mexico’s Pacific coast in Jalisco state, in keeping with Mexico’s defence ministry.

His corpse arrived in Mexico Metropolis on Sunday afternoon in a closely guarded convoy of Nationwide Guard troops.

Mexican forces led and carried out the raid with intelligence help from the US, sources stated.

A brand new US-military-led job pressure performed a job, a US defence official advised Reuters. Mexico’s defence ministry stated it acquired “complementary info” from the US.

After stories of El Mencho’s dying, cartel henchmen blockaded highways with burning vehicles and torched companies in additional than half a dozen states, paralysing elements of the nation. No civilian deaths have been reported.

In Jalisco’s widespread seaside resort of Puerto Vallarta, frightened vacationers on social media described a “warfare zone” as plumes of darkish smoke rose into the sky from across the bay. Air Canada, United Airways, Aeromexico and American Airways suspended flights within the space.
