In her opinion piece “Move beyond fear and discover AI’s real promise” (Dec. 6, Opinion), Christine Chew highlights the potential of synthetic intelligence to ship outstanding good points in well being care, schooling and knowledge accessibility. She argues that we are able to form AI by embracing it, however I imagine that she underestimates the hurdles to making sure that its advantages will outweigh its important prices.

AI already consumes large portions of water, electrical energy and mental property whereas producing huge wealth for its builders. Additionally it is extensively accessible to individuals with restricted coaching on how you can use it safely and successfully. To date, tech titans have provided solely imprecise assurances of future carbon neutrality and social duty. Nothing in these objectives ties the expansion of AI to concrete laws for its accountable improvement.

Till we’ve plans as a substitute of guarantees, we’d be smart to restrain the expansion of AI.
