    WASHINGTON: Air Canada stated Monday (Mar 30) that CEO Michael Rousseau will retire later this yr, an announcement following controversy over his failure to challenge condolences each in English and French for a deadly airport catastrophe.

    Rousseau had sparked controversy by issuing an English-only video message to specific condolences after a deadly collision late on March 22 between an Air Canada jet and a fireplace truck at New York’s LaGuardia Airport.

    Canada has two official languages – English and French –  and media stories famous that one of many pilots killed within the accident was from French-speaking Quebec.

    Rousseau has knowledgeable the corporate’s board that he’ll retire by the tip of the third quarter, the airline stated, including that work is underway to decide on his successor.

    “The Board will contemplate plenty of efficiency standards in assessing candidates together with the power to speak in French,” Air Canada stated within the assertion.

    Till he steps down, Rousseau is about to proceed main the corporate and serving on its board.

    Air Canada is the nation’s largest airline and is headquartered in Montreal, Quebec – Canada’s historically French-speaking area. The corporate is required to supply companies in each languages.
