When Mark Cuban bought a majority stake within the Dallas Mavericks simply over a 12 months in the past, he thought he’d keep management of basketball operations. The Luka Doncic commerce proves that is not the case.

After the Mavericks shocked the NBA world by buying and selling Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers, Cuban confirmed to Dallas TV station WFAA that he had nothing to do with the commerce. That is not a shock, contemplating the love Cuban had for the 25-year-old Slovenian guard. He as soon as claimed he’d select Doncic over his spouse.

Again in 2020, Cuban claimed, “If I had to decide on between my spouse and preserving Luka on the Mavs, catch me at my lawyer’s workplace getting ready for a divorce.” The unhealthy information for Cuban is that Doncic is now a Laker. The excellent news is that he is nonetheless married.

Cuban could have been naive to suppose he might maintain management of the Mavericks after promoting to the Adelson household. That proved not to be the case quickly after the sale, which contained no language guaranteeing Cuban to proceed operating basketball operations. Quickly after the sale, Dallas common supervisor Nico Harrison started reporting to the crew’s new governor, Patrick Dumont, the son-in-law of Adelson household matriarch Miriam Adelson.

It isn’t the one indignity Cuban has suffered since promoting a giant chunk of his crew. For the primary 23 years proudly owning the Mavericks, Cuban used to sit down behind their bench at highway video games, the place he might yell on the crew and officers. He advised Marc Stein in November that the NBA has forbidden him from sitting there, so Cuban solely attends highway video games.

Cuban is all the way down to a 27% stake within the Mavericks, and the Adelsons should purchase one other 20% from him within the subsequent three years. It is a massive drop in energy for Cuban. First, he misplaced his seat. Now, he is misplaced his favourite participant.
