TEHRAN: Protesters and safety forces clashed in a number of Iranian cities on Thursday (Jan 1), with six reported killed, the primary deaths because the cost-of-living demonstrations broke out.

The protests started on Sunday in Tehran, the place shopkeepers went on strike over excessive costs and financial stagnation, and have since unfold to different components of the nation.

On Thursday, Iran’s Fars information company reported two individuals killed in clashes between safety forces and protesters within the metropolis of Lordegan, within the province of Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari, and three in Azna, in neighbouring Lorestan province.

“Some protesters started throwing stones on the metropolis’s administrative buildings, together with the provincial governor’s workplace, the mosque, the Martyrs’ Basis, the city corridor and banks,” Fars stated of Lordegan, including that police responded with tear gasoline.

Fars reported that the buildings have been “severely broken” and that police arrested a number of individuals described as “ringleaders”.

In Azna, Fars stated “rioters took benefit of a protest gathering … to assault a police commissariat”.

Throughout earlier protest actions, state media has labelled demonstrators “rioters”.
