United Kingdom Maritime Commerce Operations (UKMTO) reviews the vessel is taking over water after being focused with gunfire and rocket-propelled grenades.

A industrial vessel within the Purple Sea has come below assault after small boats fired rocket-propelled grenades and computerized weapons in the direction of the ship.

In response to the organisation United Kingdom Maritime Commerce Operations (UKMTO), the incident happened 94km (51 nautical miles) southwest of the Yemeni port of Hodeidah.

“The vessel has been engaged by a number of small vessels who’ve opened fireplace with small arms and self-propelled grenades. [The] armed safety group have returned fireplace and scenario is ongoing,” mentioned UKMTO, which is run by Britain’s Royal Navy.

The UKMTO mentioned the assault resulted in a fireplace onboard and the vessel started taking over water Sunday night time as its crew ready to desert ship.

“Authorities are investigating,” it mentioned, including later the ship was ablaze after being “struck by unknown projectiles”.

“UKMTO has had affirmation from the Firm Safety Officer that the vessel is taking over water and crew are getting ready to desert ship,” an announcement mentioned.

Maritime safety sources added that the vessel was recognized because the Liberian-flagged, Greek-owned bulk provider Magic Seas.

British maritime safety agency Ambrey mentioned in an advisory that the ship was attacked by 4 unmanned floor automobiles [USVs].

“Two of the USVs impacted the port facet of the vessel, damaging the vessel’s cargo,” Ambrey added.

Whereas nobody has claimed accountability, Ambrey mentioned the assault matched the “established Houthi target profile”.

The Yemen-based armed group the Houthis started focusing on vessels within the Purple Sea shortly after Israel’s warfare on Gaza started in October 2023, which the Houthis say is in defence of the Palestinians residing within the besieged enclave.

Since November 2023, the Houthis have launched greater than 100 assaults focusing on industrial vessels, disrupting world transport and forcing corporations to reroute.

Their marketing campaign has expanded to incorporate vessels linked to the USA and the UK because the two international locations initiated navy strikes in January 2024.

In Could, the Houthis and the US agreed on a ceasefire that might see the top of assaults on US ships. However the Houthis vowed to proceed to focus on Israeli-linked vessels.

A renewed Houthi marketing campaign towards transport may once more attract US and Western forces to the realm.

This comes at a delicate second within the Center East as a doable ceasefire within the warfare on Gaza hangs within the stability, and as Iran weighs whether or not to restart negotiations over its nuclear programme following US air strikes focusing on its most delicate atomic websites.
