    TOKYO: Japanese atomic bomb survivors mentioned Thursday (Feb 5) they feared the world was marching in the direction of nuclear conflict because the last US-Russian arms control treaty expired.

    The New START treaty ended with the flip of the calendar to Feb 5, after US President Donald Trump didn’t comply with up on Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin’s proposal to increase warhead limits within the settlement for one 12 months.

    Terumi Tanaka, co-chair of Nihon Hidankyo, a bunch of survivors of the 1945 US nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, mentioned the world has didn’t see the urgency of the problem.

    The staunchly pacifist grassroots group acquired the Nobel Peace Prize in 2024.

    “Given the present scenario, I’ve a sense that within the not-too-distant future, we’ll even have a nuclear conflict and head towards destruction,” Tanaka mentioned at a press convention held with fellow Japanese campaigners.

    The 93-year-old mentioned he feared that residents of nuclear-armed nations might not give a lot thought to their nation’s weapons.

    “They may even see it as proof that they are a terrific energy. That is an enormous mistake,” he warned.

    The USA dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the place Tanaka lived, in August 1945. Shortly afterwards, Japan surrendered, ending World Conflict II.

    Round 140,000 folks died in Hiroshima and about 74,000 others in Nagasaki, together with many from the results of radiation publicity.

    It was the one time that atomic weapons have been utilized in warfare.
