Re: “Trump commutes sentence of former U.S. Rep. George Santos in federal fraud case” (Oct. 17, Nation):

I used to be appalled to learn of the commutation of George Santos’ sentence, as I’ve been of some commutations previously from each events. I’ve at all times been baffled on the Founding Fathers’ knowledge in granting the president this extraordinary energy. However reflecting on the specter of conviction now going through some political opponents of President Donald Trump (e.g., Letitia James, James Comey), I discover comfort that this would possibly some day find yourself being their savior. Maybe that is simply the type of political disaster the founders had in thoughts.

Certainly, as one college of regulation believes, “Higher that ten responsible individuals go free than that one harmless particular person undergo.”

    Frank Schumann, Seattle
