Re: “Mark Twain’s words about patriotism can ease our injured pride” (July 6, Northwest):

Columnist Danny Westneat mirrored effectively on Mark Twain’s knowledge that “ … true patriotism … is loyalty to the nation on a regular basis, loyalty to the federal government when it deserves it.”

Once I rode my bicycle throughout nation in 2016, from Neah Bay to Lubec, Maine, I skilled the kindness of strangers day by day, civility in native cafes and a grounded commonality that transcended politics. That is the basic patriotism that Twain and Westneat write about.

We are able to disagree in regards to the present authorities and politics usually, but we share the Stars and Stripes, and a nationwide identification deeper than our disagreements. Name me Panglossian, but I’m optimistic for our greatest of all doable international locations.

    Dave Galvin, Seattle
