MANILA: The Philippine and US air forces kicked off joint workouts on Monday (Apr 7) aimed toward boosting operational coordination and enhancing “strategic deterrence”, Manila’s army mentioned.

The drills comply with months of confrontations between Bejing and Manila over disputed areas of the South China Sea, with considerably bigger US-Philippine air, land and sea workouts set for late April.

“Enhancing fight readiness and elevating joint mission effectiveness” could be central to the Cope Thunder train, Philippine Air Power commander Arthur Cordura mentioned Monday at a ceremony to launch the drills.

Army ties between the Philippines and United States have deepened for the reason that 2022 election of President Ferdinand Marcos, with Manila pushing again on sweeping Chinese language claims within the South China Sea that a world tribunal has dominated are with out benefit.

The US State Division final week approved a long-mooted sale of F-16 fighter jets to the Philippines, although Manila mentioned the deal was “nonetheless within the negotiation part”.

Talking at Monday’s ceremony, US Main Normal Christopher Sheppard mentioned that “the tempo of our alliance is accelerating”.

Cope Thunder, which is able to proceed via Apr 18, goals to boost “uneven warfare capabilities”, operational coordination and strategic deterrence, in line with the Philippine Air Power.

“Additional down the street, we sit up for the seamless transition to train Balikatan, which is able to proceed to push the boundaries of our interoperability,” Cordura added.
