Having lived in Germany by means of a lot of the Hitler years, I used to be shocked on the headline “Trump directs military to expand policing of U.S. cities” (Aug. 26, A1). The enlargement will embrace the quelling of civil disturbances as President Donald Trump threatens to deploy the Nationwide Guard in cities run by his political enemies. Completely different opinions make you a political enemy?

It was horrifying how I heard echoes of Hitler’s SS (Schutzstaffel, “Safety Squadron”).

I taught German at North Seattle School for twenty-four years. My college students requested me how on this planet Germany beneath Hitler might have perpetrated such crimes in opposition to humanity. To their dismay, I responded that, sadly, relying on circumstances, it might occur anyplace, even in these United States.

    Could I be confirmed flawed.

    Eva Mader, Mercer Island
