    US removes Syria from state sponsor of terrorism list

    WASHINGTON: The US on Monday (Aug 24) eliminated Syria from its listing of state sponsors of terrorism, rescinding a decades-old designation that got here with extreme financial restrictions and marking one other step in warming ties between the nations.

    The US Division of State additionally revoked its designation of al-Nusra Entrance – latterly generally known as Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) – as a worldwide terrorist organisation. The Treasury Division introduced corresponding sanctions reduction. 

    Rebels led by HTS overthrew long-time Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, with the group’s chief Ahmed al-Sharaa taking on as president because the nation rebuilds after greater than 13 years of civil battle.
