NEW YORK: Ousted Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro urged a US decide on Wednesday (Sep 2) to dismiss felony drug trafficking prices towards him, arguing he needs to be immune from prosecution as the top of a sovereign nation.

The fees, filed in Manhattan federal court docket, fashioned the idea for the US army’s raid on Caracas and seize of Maduro on Jan 3. The Venezuelan chief, who has been held in a Brooklyn federal jail since his seizure, has pleaded not responsible and is scheduled to go on trial on Jun 1, 2027, if his effort to dismiss the case is unsuccessful.

The precept that sitting heads of state are immune from prosecution overseas is a longstanding tenet of worldwide legislation seen as basic to diplomacy. Maduro’s push to influence Manhattan-based US District Decide Alvin Hellerstein to dismiss the case will check US courts’ normal reluctance to use worldwide legislation in felony instances.
